There are options aplenty as to where to take the RV and set up camp. There are public campgrounds, such as those located in national forests and state parks, that are managed by federal, state, or local agencies. Counties and townships also manage public campgrounds.  Or you can also choose a privately operated campground or RV park. These are operated by private individuals or businesses.

There are differences between public and private, from the size of the site to who can be admitted to the types of amenities, and there are plenty of options for every type of RV owner. Through experience and the recommendation of others, you may prefer one or the other, but we wanted to address some basic questions regarding private campgrounds to better help you make your travel plans. Either route, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy all that Michigan has to offer.

Q: What are the main differences between private and public campgrounds?

A: Public campgrounds and RV parks will generally be more “woodsy” with more surrounding forest and unpaved roads. They also offer more space and seclusion, and they may have restrictions on generator use. Many public campgrounds don’t have full hookups as can be found at private campgrounds and parks, so they might not be the best choice for a long stay. However, many of them do; just do your homework ahead of time.

You’ll find more amenities – sewer, electric, water hookups – and things to do in private campgrounds, such as pools, arcades, miniature golf courses, and playgrounds. Organized activities and themed weekends are also common. There are typically few or no tent sites at private campgrounds, RV parks, or RV resorts.

Q: Does the size of my RV matter?

A: Yes! Many public campgrounds have restrictions as to how large your rig can be. Private campgrounds typically have space for various sizes of rigs, from a small towable to a large Class A motorhome; however, some private locations restrict by RV type. Some will be open to a mix while others may only be for the larger classes of motorhomes or motorhomes of certain ages.

Q: Is a private campground going to be more expensive?

A: It’s true that the seasonal, weekly, and nightly rates might be a little higher than the rates found at public campgrounds. But it depends on the campground, park, or resort – if you belong to certain associations or groups, you may be eligible for discounts. Your expectations and what you get out of your experience also come into play and impact the “value” of the campground and whether or not you paid too much.

Q: Is it easier to get a site at a private campground versus a public campground?

A: Probably not, for many reasons. Private campgrounds and RV parks can fill up faster because (1) they can be smaller; or (2) have many loyal customers. There are also more RVs on the road than ever before, and Michigan has grown quite the reputation as a destination state, so you have to compete with tourists as well as Michiganders. Getting a site also depends on where in Michigan and the time of year you intend to camp. Beachside at Lake Michigan in mid-July? Those spots are often the first to go, and that goes for both private and public places.

Take into account that reservation systems vary, among private and public campgrounds alike. Private campgrounds may or may not have an online booking system, whereas public campgrounds – such as those in national forests – do.

Q: How do I choose which private campground to stay at?

A: It all comes down to preferences, recommendations, and a “gut” feeling. Research the campgrounds on the web and social media to see what your experience would be like, give them a call to get a feel for the management and staff, look for testimonials from people who have stayed there, and ask other RVers who have stayed there for their recommendation. Some campgrounds have activities that are perfect for kids, but that may not be important to you if you don’t have any young ones tagging along. Again, it depends on what you want your experience to be like. Chances are, you’ll find the perfect spot.
