Most people agree that camping brings families closer together in one way or another. Between sleeping in close-knit quarters, cooking family meals, and participating in daily activities—families learn to interact more and strengthen their bonds. But camping isn’t just for family socializing—it can open the door to a whole new world of friends that share similar interests in the camping lifestyle.
So how do you make friends while camping? The possibilities are endless and quite often the opportunity to make friends is easier than you think. We asked several MARVAC members for their suggestions and ideas on the best ways to make friends while camping. Here are some of their ideas:
Offer help, it shouldn’t be too hard to get everyone is talking and laughing. Some campgrounds even have group fire pits available to use.
Walk around—Taking a stroll through the campground will provide you with a great opportunity to meet new people. Start by introducing yourself and your family members. Compliment something you like about their campsite, ask if they need anything or invite them over for snacks or a game. If they have children close in age to your own children, offer a play date or offer to meet at the campground’s play.
Games—Get everyone involved with a family game day or night. Invite everyone to bring their favorite game—cards, board games, backyard games—then alternate playing different games throughout the day or night. If there are younger children, consider setting up a kid’s game area and a separate one for adults. Games are a great way to not only break the ice, but ensure everyone has a good time.
Food—Make some appetizers or dessert that you can pass around to neighboring campers. Whether it’s homemade or store bought, everyone will appreciate the gesture and the snacks. Potluck dinners are also a great way to meet new people. Invite neighboring campers to bring a dish to pass and offer to grill the main course. Organize a snack or dessert night and coordinate with some games or activities.
