or an engaging educational experience, visit one of the Michigan DNR’s visitor centers. Many host nature-oriented programs throughout the year about Michigan’s natural resources. These visitor centers are typically just steps away from trails, too, so you can get some exercise for your muscles as well as
your mind. Just keep in mind that a recreation passport is required in most cases and many are closed on state holidays.
Eddy Discovery Center:
Located in Chelsea, Michigan, just 10 minutes from urban Ann Arbor is the Eddy Discovery Center in the Waterloo Recreation Area. The exhibit hall explores Michigan’s geology and diverse habitats from the Ice Age to today. Waterloo is also the place to go to find sandhill cranes.

Gillette:
Located in P.J. Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon, the visitor center sits in one of the nation’s most impressive dune systems. And that’s the story told within the center. Afterwards, go on a half-mile walk on the Lake Michigan
Trail to a sweeping view of the majestic lake.

Hartwick Pines:
Certainly one of the most popular visitor centers in the state, and for good reason. It sits among one of Michigan’s last stands of majestic old-growth pine forest, which is worth exploring if you’ve got the time. The exhibit hall has hands-on exhibits and a talking “living tree.” In addition to the visitor’s center, you can visit the logging museum depicting the state’s 19th century
