MICHIGAN’S OUTDOORS ARE OPEN FOR YOU
In 2020, the Michigan DNR saw an increase in the number of people visiting the state’s parks, trails, boat launches, and rivers. That trend continued in 2021, as people took to the outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
Regardless of there being a pandemic spurring outdoor activity, we all need to do our part to stay safe as well as protect the health and beauty of the Mitten State. We need
to guard our places and resources so that our children and grandchildren, and all the generations after, get to enjoy them. That being said, the Michigan DNR has published several tips.
Know Before You Go
Check for closures before heading out. If crowded, have a Plan B. Fishing or hunting? Know the seasons and have any necessary permits or licenses.
Plan Ahead
Restrooms or drinking fountains may be closed. Pack food, water, hand sanitizer, and a mask. Cell service may be limited, especially in the woods and waters.
Leave No Trace
Respect our lands and waters. Take all trash and recycling out with you. Take steps to help prevent the spread of invasive species. Stay off muddy trails.
Explore Locally
Limit long-distance travel and make use of local parks, trails, and public spaces. Be mindful of your impact on communities you visit.
Practice Social Distancing
Keep your group size small and mind any current health orders. Be prepared to mask up and give others space. Stay home when sick.
Play It Safe
Choose lower-risk activities and understand safety guidelines. Health care and search and rescue resources are strained. Watch out for ticks, they have been abundant in recent years.
Build An Inclusive Outdoors
Foster a welcoming outdoors for all identities and abilities. Smile and say “hi” to people you encounter. Learn about accessible recreation opportunities.
Be A Kind Visitor
Know your trail etiquette. Follow posted rules. Keep wildlife wild. Be respectful of other people’s space. Leash and clean up after pets. BE KIND!
