The Au Sable River has a reputation for being a great stream to enjoy a day of fly-fishing. Comins Flats in Mentor Township has public access and is an ideal spot to wade in and spend some time trying to catch a trout. The Au Sable has some of the most picturesque scenery of any river in the northeast region of the state.
Cheboygan is a small Michigan town that sits on the shore of Lake Huron. It’s also very close to the Inland Waterway, a connected chain of lakes and rivers that stretches 38 miles. Anglers can hook rainbow trout, brook trout, salmon, bass, walleye, and sunfish in the Cheboygan River. You can also choose to fish from the Cheboygan Lock & Dam Park, a favorite spot for locals. There are three fishing piers at Major City Park on the east side of the river.
Flora and Fauna
Dahlia Hills just one mile north of Midland is comprised of eight terraces filled to the brim with 3,000 dahlia plants. There are aluminum sculptures available for viewing, too, among the tiers, stairways, and gravel pathways. Visit dahliahill.org.
If you are farther north in May and June, then take a ferry to Mackinac Island to see the fragrant purple and white lilacs that are part of the island’s fame. They are everywhere! Some lilacs are two centuries old. Join in the festivities of the annual Lilac Festival, which takes place every June and lasts for 10 days, if you wish. Visit mackinacisland.org.

Alpena is a gem of a town situated on the shores of Thunder Bay, which runs into
Lake Huron. Visit Island Park, also known as Duck Park, located not far from the quaint downtown area. This island sanctuary is gated by a covered bridge that is a masterpiece to behold. There are a few short trails on the island and several overlooks.
If more remote is more your style, then drive 20 minutes to Bell Bay Natural Area, a quiet, peaceful escape with a long beach that’s a perfect place to sit and relax while the kids wade in the shallows (it doesn’t get deep very quickly), swim, or skip stones. Or, you can choose to wander the trails that meander through a virgin pine forest and past historic homesteads.
