Those who enjoy fly-fishing can’t beat the Boardman River in Grand Traverse County that meanders 160 miles before emptying into Grand Traverse Bay in Traverse City. The river
has cedar-lined banks and is well-known for its brown trout, rainbow trout, and perch. The Brown Bridge Quiet Area seems to be a hopping spot. It’s considered one of the top 10 trout streams in Michigan.
Some of the best salmon runs are in this region of the state, namely the Pere Marquette River (Ludington) and the Big Manistee River (Manistee), which sees exceptional salmon migrations from late August through early November. You can also head out onto the big lake, Lake Michigan, for Coho salmon.
Flora and Fauna
The Old Mission Peninsula juts out 13 glorious miles between East and West
Grand Traverse Bays. Its long history as an agricultural area runs to the present day. There are rows and rows of cherry trees, which burst into bloom every May for a spectacle that’s riveting for the eyes and senses. Take a drive to see the dainty blossoms in all their splendor, and maybe stop at a winery or two that offers a view of the French- like countryside.
One winery on Old Mission, Brys Estate, offers visitors more than delicious wine. Starting
in June, Brys invites you to enjoy its Secret Garden, which has more than 6,000 lavender plants, fresh flowers, and a strawberry patch. Meander among the diverse blooms with a glass of lavender lemonade or strawberry and lavender ice cream, custom prepared by nearby (and famous) Moomers.
Young Brood
M-22 is a scenic highway that passes through some of the state’s most gorgeous countryside – and through some of the sweetest small towns. One stop that should not be missed is Arcadia Overlook in Manistee County, also known as Inspiration Point. If you’ve been taking a driving tour of M-22, this is a perfect chance for everyone to stretch their legs. The town of Arcadia is right on the water, but then you’ll quickly climb nearly 400 feet up to the parking lot that leads to the overlook. Now it’s time to climb 120 steps (first one up wins!) to
the highest perch in the county. On a clear day you may even see the beacon of the North Pierre Lighthouse back in Manistee Harbor. There are picnic tables and charcoal grills around if you want to enjoy a snack or a meal while gazing at the Michigan landscape from above.
