 Outdoor Enthusiast
The Upper Peninsula is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground, and you can begin your adventure by exploring the 95,238-acre Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Thousands of birds pass through Seney on their migration paths, and the refuge is home to beavers, otters and a variety of wildlife. The Marshland Wildlife Drive is a seven-mile route that takes you through quintessential Northern Michigan hardwood and pine forests and wetlands, with multiple observation points along the way.
Several hiking trails crisscross the refuge, offering you a chance to stretch your legs and soak in the beauty of the area. To get an up-close view of the pools and marshes that characterize the refuge, rent a kayak in Germfask and paddle down the Manistique River. Visit fws.gov/ refuge/seney/ for visitor center hours, trail maps and safety guidelines.
Foodie
No trip to the Upper Peninsula is complete without sampling a pasty, the region’s signature comfort food. This meat-filled pastry is available across the UP, but Lawry’s Pasty Shop has been in the business of pleasing palates since 1946. Lawry’s offers this savory local dish at two locations, one in Marquette and the original shop in Ishpeming. Lawry’s pasties come filled with beef or a vegetable medley and are available in multiple sizes to suit any hunger level.
For those craving something a little different, Steinhaus in Marquette offers classic German dishes as well as new takes on old favorites. The restaurant’s dinner menu features schnitzels, wurst, flank steak and chicken paprikash. Come in for brunch on the weekend and try the steak and eggs before exploring all that downtown Marquette has to offer. You can find the restaurant’s hours and menu at steinhausmqt.com.
Dog Owner
Dogs are welcome at several of the most beautiful beaches in the UP. Leashed pets are welcome at Miners Beach on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore or bring your pooch and catch one of the spectacular sunsets on Lake Superior from the sandy shoreline of McLain State Park in Hancock.
Bring your dog along as you discover the forests and waterfalls of beautiful Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Located just west of Ontonagon, this park welcomes leashed pets on the 90-mile trail system and along the shoreline. You can also bring your dog with you as you explore Palms Book State Park, home to the Kitch-iti-kipi spring. Dogs are welcome in the park and on the self-guided, glass-bottomed raft that allows you to see all the way to the bottom of this natural wonder.
