Whether you tube, kayak, canoe, or paddleboard, the Platte River in Honor is the perfect Northern Michigan experience. A selection of outfitters is available for shuttles and equipment rental, or you can simply launch your own.
Lower Platte River is a calm, slow-paced waterway, perfect for younger children and those looking for a leisurely afternoon. For the thrill seekers, give the Upper Platte River a go. The current is much quicker and there are far more obstacles to maneuver – low-hanging branches, downed trees, etc. The Upper Platte is recommended for experienced kayakers.
Don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch to be enjoyed on the riverbank!
Foodie
Petoskey is a bustling Northern Michigan lakeshore community with a great selection of locally owned restaurants. The City Park Grill is known for their local meat and fish selection, but they also offer a variety of vegetarian and vegan options to fit any diner’s preference.
If you prefer to cook at the campsite, hand-select your meal at the Grain Train Natural Food Market. Choose from a selection of organic, non-GMO, and local produce and proteins.
Dog Owner
This summer, spend an afternoon at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. A part of the National Parks Service, this area offers miles of groomed trails and pristine shoreline for you
and your dog to explore, relax, and splash in the cool waters of Lake Michigan. Be sure to visit their website to learn which areas of the Lakeshore are pet friendly – some areas are restricted to protect wildlife such as the endangered piping plover.
Unwind in Traverse City at one of the many pet friendly dining establishments. The Little Fleet on East Front Street offers a family friendly atmosphere with food trucks and live music. The Shed Beer Garden on South Union Street has a full menu dedicated to dogs. Their options range from apples with peanut butter to crispy salmon with veggies and rice. You’ll even walk away with a complimentary souvenir dog bowl to commemorate your visit.
