Big Win
for RVers with Authorization of “Sales Tax on the Difference”
Okemos, MI—Thanks to the efforts of the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC) and many other organizations, including the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, the Michigan legislature authorized “Sales Tax on the Difference.” This occurred after the Michigan House and Senate, who unanimously passed the pair of bills this past summer, overrode Governor Snyder’s veto of the legislation. This is only the third occurrence in 66 years.
Though focused on the auto industry, a top industry in the state of Michigan, the legislation also positively impacts the RV industry and the sale of new recreation vehicles. The new law means current owners of recreation vehicles who want to trade in their unit to purchase a new
one will only need to pay
sales tax on the difference
of the value of their trade-in
and a new recreation vehicle. Previously, RV buyers would need to pay sales tax on the entire purchase price of a new RV regardless of having a trade-in. In essence, it’s tax relief for Michigan families.
“We’re proud to have led the charge,” says Darren Ing, Director of the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds. “This is a huge win
for RVers. If you’re on the fence about purchasing a new RV, know that you are now going to get a break on the sales tax because you will only need to pay on
the difference, not on the entire purchase price of a new recreation vehicle.”
Since more Millennials and families are taking to the road – both for vacation and as a full-time lifestyle – this legislation will help them fulfill their dream of purchasing their ideal RV.
MARVAC encourages current recreation vehicle owners to make their way to
one of their annual RV shows to take
a look at new models. The shows take place February 7-11 in Novi; March 1-4 in Battle Creek; March 8-11 in Port Huron; March 15-18 in Flint; and March 23-25
in Traverse City. Check the website, MichiganRVandCampgrounds.org for more detailed information and a coupon that goes toward the ticket purchase.
