Many campers feel most at home when we’re cozied up in our RVs. Whether we’re nestled in the heart of Michigan wilderness or parked at our favorite campground, we couldn’t be more content. But let’s face it, sometimes we wish our pop ups could be more reflective of our personal style. And most of us can agree that the interior of our campers could use a bit of TLC or a few personal touches to make it feel more like home. So if your future plans consist of a fun renovation project, big or small, get ready, because here are five, relatively simple ways to brighten up a dated pop up.

1. Apply a fresh coat of paint to the cabinets and walls.

A little paint can go a long way. Pick colors that fit your family and your lifestyle – warm whites and blues for beachgoers, bright red or aqua for retro-inspired campers, and serene earth tones for those seeking a calm camping retreat. Don’t be afraid to go a little out there with your paint selection and pattern, too. Small spaces can support bold designs.

2. Reupholster cushions, curtains, and valances.

More often than not, campers – especially ones that have housed small children – can undergo quite a bit of wear-and-tear. A new, clean fabric can do wonders for restoring your camper’s aesthetics. Create a pattern from your existing fabrics and, depending on your skill set, sew your own or go the no-sew route by using a glue gun and possibly the help of a YouTube video or two. You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference some reupholstering can do!

3. Update cabinet and drawer pulls.

This is the easiest way to add an unexpected splash of character to your camper. Peruse antique stores and craft fairs to find the perfect pieces of hardware. And since most pop ups only have a few cabinets and drawers, it shouldn’t be too hard to find enough to adorn the entire rig.

4. Lay new flooring.

There are a lot of mixed reviews when it comes to selecting the right material – so you’d be wise to do your research before committing to anything – but the general consensus seems to be that peel and stick tiles work just fine. Unlike other classes of RVs, many folding camping trailers do not have mobile furniture or slide outs, so you shouldn’t have to be too worried about scraping, tearing, or damaging a tile. Keep in mind, if you’re using these tips in a larger trailer, you may want to consider an alternative material such as sheet vinyl, linoleum, or Allure. Although not as lightweight or cost-effective, they are generally more durable.

If you do decide to use peel and stick tiles, be sure to thoroughly clean your floors before you begin adhering. You’ll quickly come to find that the adhesive will not be as strong when it is applied to a dirty floor.

Regardless of the material you choose, this is not always the simplest project; there will be a lot of cutting and measuring to get that perfect fit, so be patient.

5. Introduce some fun accents.

Every small space needs a pop of color. Consider incorporating some fun, bright throw pillows to liven up your camper. A funky print, novelty quote, or eye-catching color is an easy way to make your RV uniquely yours! And if you’re concerned about space, or throw pillows just really aren’t your thing, add a decorative, yet functional piece instead. A bright teakettle, throw blanket, or hand towel can be just as effective in tying your space together, while also serving a function.
